Occasionally the amperage of electricity that goes to an appliance or device may exceeds the capacity for the machine and cause major damage. As technology moves from basic, heavy, analog designs to more lightweight, delicate, digital electronics the old phrase "they don't make them like they use to" tends to be heard more often from consumers.

At Patriot Appliance Repair, we are noticing a fast growing trend in the new refrigerators, washers, dryers, microwaves, oven stove ranges, dishwashers, and (although we don't work on them) TV's. These pretty appliances are breaking after a very short period of time due to electrical surge to the brain of the machine... the control board. NEMA Surge Protection Institute states that 60-80% of surges occur within the home itself, not just during a thunderstorm. Without having a type of regulator installed to protect the devices, appliances and electronics continue to take a beating while the homeowner is unaware.

As kitchen and laundry major appliances evolve to meet stringent EPA demands for "High Efficiency", a brand new broken product can really encourage buyer's remorse. After dishing out a few thousand bucks for a sleek Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, or Frigidaire, begging the call center gods, you are told it would be weeks before a technician can provide appliance repair... "sorry for the inconvenience". To whom is it that considered "High Efficiency"? In a time where it is hard to find integrity from manufacturers and retailers, it is wise to protect your investments on your own.

I could go on and on about the value of a Whole House Surge Protector (WHSP), and we don't even sell them! That falls under the "electrician" category. There are several options for installing one. If you are a Do-It-Yourself person there are a plethora of YouTube videos, as well as instructions with the WHSP itself. They can be purchased at most hardware stores (please, try to buy local) ranging from $50-$300. Often the manufacturer will warranty damages if you register the WHSP. You should certainly have some electrical knowledge as well as a voltage/multi-meter before embarking on this dangerous task. Of course you can call certified electrician for a quote. You can also call your electrical company to see if they will lease a Surge Protector. They will usually add about $10 per month to your bill. If you are a renter, they may still install a whole house surge protector with written permission from the property owner.

You may ask, why is this appliance repair service pushing Whole House Surge Protection when they can make more money from damaged appliances? Honestly, writing articles is good for our website, but we also do not want our potential customers to have to replace the main control board on the machine. That can get very expensive. We would rather you not have to debate with your spouse on the value of the repair and then choose to buy a new machine. There are other cheaper parts that may break in the future and you we want your business at that time!
